Zimbabwe, the US and the UN Committee on Torture

For once, the US seems to be taking the criticism levelled at it over torture seriously. They've sent 30 officials to go talk to the UN Committee Against Torture in Geneva, who've been pressing them for ages to come have a little chat.

I'm really not sure why the US chose this particular time to do this, and why they're suddenly taking all this seriously when they've mostly poo-poo'ed it up until now. Any ideas?

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe has left the same committee, fearing being called out on its own use of torture tactics in its repression of all opposition.
