'Execute Arab Members of Knesset'
Avigdor Lieberman, head of the Yisrael Beiteinu (Israel Our Home) party has called for the trial and execution of Arab members of Knesset.
'Oh you know, one head of one small party doesn't prove anything....'
Sure. But when that party has eleven seats in the Knesset, making only one seat smaller than the Likud and Shas, and when a party (the National Union) which has pretty much identical policies, has nine seats, giving them control of fully one-sixth of the Knesset between them, this cannot be discounted. Between them, these two parties got over 500,000 votes (around 16% of the total) in the recent elections (Source). There was even talk of Lieberman getting a ministerial post until a few days ago.
Israel has no capital punishment except for convicted Nazi war criminals. Lieberman is therefore comparing meeting with Hamas (which a number of Arab MK's did a few days ago) to being a Nazi. In fact, he makes the comparison directly (same article):
"The Second World War ended with the Nuremberg trials and the execution of the Nazi leadership. Not only them, but also those who collaborated with them. I hope that will also be the fate of the collaborators in this house,"Make your own judgements. Here is some information about the Arab-Israeli parties in the Knesset:
- Balad - The National Democratic Assembly
- Hadash - The Front for Democracy and Equality (sorry, Hebrew only. Arabic here. English Wikipedia article here)
- Ra'am-Ta'al - these people are hard to dig up info in English about. If anyone finds anything, please post it in comments. They are less left-wing (in the Western sense), and are seen as an Islamic party more than anything else.
Update: the Advocacy Center for Arab Citizens in Israel compares Lieberman with Jörg Haider:
"A man like Lieberman is a shame to Jewish people. It seems that Yorg Heider lives in Israel,"
